Let’s get this out of the way - Buns and Roses isn’t a reference to a certain hard-rock band.
Instead, Michelle Goldstein, owner of the downtown restaurant that just opened at 111 W. Fifth St., said the name is a tribute to figures closer to home her grandmother Gloria Goldstein, usually known as “Honeybuns” or just “Buns,” and her other grandmother, Rose Taland.
“Rose passed away recently, and I’m doing this restaurant as a tribute to her,” Goldstein said.
Their contributions aren’t just in the name Goldstein has incorporated recipes from both of them into her menu.
Buns and Roses focuses on create-your-own sandwiches with a wide variety of meat, cheese and bread options, though it also offers special creations such as a hot ham sandwich with brie and mango chutney, and fresh-made matzo balls with the soup.
The restaurant’s sandwich deals, which include chips and a drink, are priced from $6.49 to $6.75. The house salad is $4.49 and soup is $2.29 for a cup or $3.29 for a bowl.
In addition to the sandwiches and salads, Goldstein plans to start serving breakfast after Labor Day, with an emphasis on bagels, breakfast paninis and breakfast burritos, and will incorporate sushi shortly after that.
“I feel people are tired of the same old food downtown, and they’re ready for something different,” she said.
Goldstein has never owned a restaurant, though she’s an old hand in the business. Previously, she’s helped operate restaurants such as Steak and Ale, Outback Steakhouse, Panera Bread, Charleston’s and Papadeaux.
